Position Statement: I oppose raising the minimum wage.

Description of Position:
|
Creating higher paying jobs is the best way for people to earn a better living. Raising the minimum wage will make it harder for small businesses to hire more employees. The products and services offered will cost the consumer more to purchase. Raising the minimum wage is NOT the answer. As a small business owner I know what happens when the minimum wage is raised. Jobs are LOST.
I believe IT'S TIME to elect officials that will create jobs. By creating jobs it makes the job market more competitive. When the market becomes competitive wages INCREASE. Everybody wins. Business owners will enjoy a better economy to operate their business and can AFFORD to pay higher wages. Raising the minimum wage will hurt our economy and our job market. Instead we need to work to keep our jobs HERE in the US. Outsourcing of jobs is already a big issue and raising the minimum wage will only make it worse. IT'S TIME to elect common sense to the US Senate. |

The Democratic controlled Congress finally got their wish. The minimum wage will increase. While this will be welcome news to those employees who are able to keep their jobs it will not be for those who lose their jobs. Perhaps the economy is strong enough to absorb this wage increase one or two years in a row. Mark my word, that by 2009 the job market will be worse because of this action.
Timing is everything. And this was bad timing. Employers face growing competition, higher wages and increasing costs to operate. I believe the first two increases will be absorbed without too much effect. But by the third year, summer 2009, the effects will be felt. A two dollar wage increase will be difficult for many small businesses to accept. But by then the Democrats mission may be accomplished. Lower wage earners getting a raise will vote Democratic. Those losing their jobs will apply for government assistance. Long held to be a stronghold for democratic leaning voters. The Democrats have sold out our economy for votes.
Did you see a resultant change in federally mandated wages for immigrants being lowered? NO. So immigrants still get paid MORE than the minimum wage for citizens. YOUR Democratic friends in Congress was not worried about that! Legal citizens should vote for lower wages for immigrants. You will pay for this increase in minimum wage because it was not a valid solution to a growing problem. Creating better paying jobs is the best and only way to provide a higher standard of living. ITS TIME to elect someone who will do whats right not whats wrong. Guess which solution West Virginia's elected Senators voted for?
For the record, according to a recent TIME magazine article the federally mandated wage for immigrants on a tree farm in North Carolina is over $9.00 per hour. The Democrats in Congress gave legal American citizens raises over three years that end up $1.75 LESS than what immigrants earn! Will voters thank them for it? ITS TIME to vote for American common sense. |
