Position Statement: I support Ophthalmologists as specially trained medical health care providers.

Description of Position:
|
The service provided by Ophthalmologists is extremely valuable to the wellbeing of eye care patients. In my private practice I refer to various specialities, but none more than to Ophthalmologists. Together with Optometrists, they provide the quality eye care services that make our health care system the best in the world. Working together is always more productive than competing. Each profession has its niche in the health care of patients. I intend to work with Ophthalmologists to lower their malpractice insurance costs & liability. Guarding the Medicare and Medicaid benefits of recipients so that they have access to the best providers of health care for their particular needs. HMOs tend to limit selection which in the long run could lead to a reduction in quality of care. There are several new eye related issues that could benefit the profession, such as the preventative initial visit now offered for new Medicare patients. Referrals for eye care should be provided earlier on in a condition s development, allowing for more cost effective management.
Ophthalmologists should have nothing to fear from an Optometrist in the Senate. I will work to their benefit as I will for all citizens of West Virginia. |

Medicare now penalizes Ophthalmologists for providing pharmacotherapy. Ophthalmologists should not be financially punished for providing Standard of Care service. Medicare reimbursements need to be made fairly. |
