Position Statement: The energy crisis requires a comprehensive plan for our future.

Description of Position:
|
Congress currently has a plan: it is called DO NOTHING. Senator Obama speaks of change. Yet he is a member of the democratic led Congress that is doing nothing right now to help. I am not just talking about higher gas prices. While very important the greater importance should be on the long term future of energy. There is not one comprehensive energy plan in Congress. A recent story in Time Magazine (April 28, 2008) illustrates the focus point of the media. First the good news! There is an estimated 4.3 billion barrels of oil reserves under North Dakota and Montana and now we have the technology (and the higher gas prices to make it worth the effort--that part was left out of the article) to go get it. Let's all dance for joy! But wait. The U.S. uses 7.6 billion barrels per year. So If all the estimated reserves were retrieved that would only last us 7 months. Sure it will help some, but it is not the answer to the problem. It is like putting a band aid on a broken leg. Our energy legs are broken and we only have bandaids to try to fix them. |

All personal vehicles imported into the U.S. should be hybrids or use alternate energy sources by 2014. All domestic produced personal vehicles should meet the same standards by 2015. The cheapest and most cost effective method to reduce our oil consumption is to use less. Producing more is expensive, time-consuming and less environmentally friendly. Driving less or using more efficient transportation is the key. |
